Wednesday, June 1st:
Over 200 Riders competed in the inaugural ABD Masters Criterium - an exciting afternoon of fast races, new and familiar faces, and some great food. Threatening clouds early on eventually gave way to sunny skies and a bit of wind as riders battled it out on Alter Park's one-mile loop.

The first two races of the day, Masters 60+/65+/70+ and Women's 40+/50+/60+, came down to field sprints as the headwind on the backside of the course meant riders were content to stay tucked in the group. In the Men's race it was Tom Weil of Cycles Veloce taking the win (as well as two primes), and in the Women's race Jean Tschampa of The Bike Shop/Tin Fish took all the primes and the victory.

Next up were the "First Timers" Men and Women — riders who'd never raced a pack style race before. In the Men's race a suspiciously savvy group of three riders worked together and quickly established a lead. Sead Duranovic of Aurora, IL took the three-up sprint. Tammi Ciciora of Downers Grove won the Women's event. Now that they've taken the plunge, hopefully we'll see these riders back at the Winfield Criterium on August 14th!

With several teams represented and fields of close to 50 and 100 riders, respectively, in the Masters 50+ and 40+ races, it was inevitable that breaks would escape in these races. In the 50+ race, a group of eight riders escaped early in the race that included eternal rivals Mike Farrrell (ABD) and Tom Doughty (AMD Masters). At the line it was Farrell just edging out Doughty with a well-time bike throw. In the 40+ race a group of four escaped the field just before the halfway point with all the major teams represented: Team Wisconsin had Dave Eckel, MACK sent John Fleckenstein, Team Estridge/Delta had Johnnie Moles, and to no surprise — a "recently returned to racing" Fabio Orlandi of PYOC also made the cut. The group quickly gained the straightaway and went out of sight while their teammates covered any moves in the field and Darin Marhanka (Estridge/Delta) cleaned up the primes. At the line Eckel took the win ahead of Moles and Marhanka handily took the field sprint.
